2012 San Miguel Pro Zarautz presented by Euskaltel is a Go
CAPBRETON, France (Tuesday, July 3, 2012) - The ASP 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz presented by Euskaltel is now officially confirmed and will return from August 28 – September 2, 2012 to the beautiful Basque town of Zarautz. In it’s sixth consecutive year, the San Miguel Pro Zarautz is a strong event on the European schedule and will host once again some of the World’s best surfing talents to try and claim the prestigious event title won in 2011 by none other than Gabriel Medina (BRA).
With more than a hundred foreign competitors anticipated to join, the San Miguel Pro Zarautz will also be a unique occasion for the local fans to watch a dozen Basque riders compete at the highest international level and try to prove themselves against the likes of Filipe Toldeo (BRA) and Glenn Hall (IRE), currently sitting high on the World Rankings. Aritz Aranburu (EUK) will be one to watch come August 28, as the local hero will use homefield advantage to try and win the event a second time. Rob Gunning, ASP Europe’s Tour Manager talks about the importance of this event for the local community.
“The San Miguel Pro Zarautz presented by Euskaltel is on again in 2012 and promises to be one of the highlights of our ASP Europe summer leg of events” stated Gunning. “It is one of those events that the entire town and region gets behind and supports. The local kids are in their hundreds as they eagerly watch all the action going on in the water as well as a close up view of all their heroes. It really is a great atmosphere that we are very proud to be part of.”
This year in an effort to renew the event off-surf program, Surf Zarauzko Elkartea has organized an art exhibition of the painter Paul Ugartetxea both in the city and in the surfers area of the competition site. There will also be opportunities for the public to demonstrate their art skills and share fun experiences with the artist. For those who won’t be able to join the event this year, the organizers also have anticipated their demands and will offer a complete website with regular updates and news online as well as a live streaming of the competition, quizzes, highlights and more, also available through their smartphone application ! Finally the traditional music festival and barbecue nights will complete a busy night-activities schedule of this 2012 edition of the San Miguel Pro Zarautz presented by Euskaltel.
“Apart from the incredible hospitality and welcome that surfers and officials receive each year in Zarautz, the San Miguel Zarautz Pro will have even more parallel activities running during the 6-day waiting period with art, music and innovative apps for smartphones developed by Euskaltel to follow every moment of the event”, Gunning said.
