Injury Update: Road to Recovery with Evan Geiselman
Geiselman will be back in the water for the upcoming ASP Prime Nike US Open of Surfing.
HUNTINGTON BEACH, California/USA (Friday, July 13, 2012) – The next generation pushing the boundaries of progressive surfing are no strangers to injury. Yadin Nicol, Dusty Payne, Jadson Andre, Dane Reynolds and most recently Kolohe Andino, all aerial talents, have all sustained leg injuries while pushing their personal boundaries above the lip.
Evan Geiselman suffered a similar fate just a few months ago while on a trip with his Hurley teammates in Costa Rica. The Floridian turned San Clemente transplant launched a backside air-reverse and an awkward landing would see Geiselman sidelined for several months compliments of a broken fibula, forcing him to withdraw from several major events on the ASP schedule.
With his sights set on qualification for the 2013 ASP WCT and a string of solid results to start off the season, Geiselman’s injury was without question a massive blow to his 2012 campaign, but the impressive goofy-footer’s spirits are high regardless of the unfortunate circumstances. With a dedicated rehabilitation regime and extreme focus, Geiselman got back in the water for the first time just a few days ago and is expected to compete in the upcoming ASP Prime Nike US Open of Surfing.
The ASP recently caught up with EG and he gave us the breakdown on the injury, recovery process and what his goals are for the rest of 2012.
How did the injury happen? Where were you and when was it?
The injury happened in Costa Rica on a Hurley trip. I did the injury try a backside air reverse and I guess came down wrong and then heard it pop. It was the worst pain of my life.
What has the rehab process been like?
Rehab has been awesome I’ve been in 5 days a week sometimes 6. It’s been working. I’m surfing way before everyone thought. I couldn’t have done it without Dr Dave Sales and Kevyn Dean. Those guys have done a great job with me. Also Dr Kramer who did my surgery as well.
When are you expected to be back in the water and if you are, how’s it feeling?
It’s been about 5 days now and each day it’s feeling better and I’m just working my hardest to get ready for the US Open.
You were building momentum this year and I know it was your goal to qualify, you must have been super bummed to get hurt. Can you take us through your thoughts about that and have you redirected your goals for this year now?
I’m not bummed at all. It happened for a reason and my goal for this year is to come back better than I was. There are still a good amount of comps left too, so I’m going to just surf each one and see how it goes.
I saw you’re in the draw for the US Open, you must be psyched to know you’ll be getting things back to normal. What are your thoughts/expectations for US Open this year?
I’m extremely excited for the Open. That’s my favorite event of the year. I really just want to be confident surfing on my ankle and come into it surfing how I surf and take it from there.
