Stormy Weather Puts a Halt to Competition on Day 2 of the Sooruz Lacanau Pro

GRANDE PLAGE, Lacanau – France (Wednesday, August 15, 2012) – This morning conditions were radically opposed to yesterday’s, with stormy winds and unclement swell at the main beach of Lacanau. 3-4Ft surf is breaking but the strong wind gusts have destroyed the lineup, not allowing competition to re-start at the ASP 5-Star Sooruz Lacanau Pro.

With an expected improvement in the conditions forecasted for the upcoming four days remaining in the event’s waiting period, event officials have decided to call a lay-day today and will reconvene tomorrow morning at 8am to decide wether the third round of competition can be disputed in Lacanau.

Iain ‘Ratso’ Buchanan, ASP Europe’s head judge, had a close look at the ocean all morning and decided along with the contest director, to call off competition after the third call today. Both observed that the conditions didn’t improved as expected and remained significantly difficult compared to what they’re going to be in the upcoming days.

“We’ve decided to call it off today and have a lay-day” stated Buchanan. “I’m just coming from surfing actually and a few of the guys from the next round were out there and it was realy hard to link up one or two manoeuvers, it’s quite choppy and bumpy. There’s no need to rush this round, the forecast is looking really good for the rest of the week, the winds are lighter and offshore and the swell’s bigger for tomorrow and the next days.. We can afford to call today off and have the best conditions for the Round of 96 and the following rounds where all the top seeded surfers are coming in.”

The next call is set to 8am tomorrow morning to reassess conditions and decide when the competition will re-start.
