REMEMBERED: Andy Irons (1978 – 2010)

Andy Irons (1978 – 2010)
SANTA CRUZ, California/USA (Friday, November 2, 2012) – Today marks the two-year anniversary of the passing of our friend, brother and champion, Andy Irons. It is a sad day for everyone in the surfing world, but also a day in which we choose to remember him as he was: a fiercely loyal friend, a man of passion, the people’s champion, a brother, a husband, a soon-to-be father, one of the most inspiring, stylish, fearless and charismatic individuals to ever step foot on a surfboard. We encourage you to take a moment today to reflect on who Andy was and smile. As always, our thoughts are with the Irons family. We miss you Andy.

RIP Andy. Miss watching you surf dude. Best big wave rider ever.
The first time I saw Andy surf it was in some left hand point, Indonesia type. I honestly thought it was Kelly Slater surfing. When I saw Andy Irons written on the screen, I thought: “wow, they are catching up to him!”. Later it became clear that only Andy was ready to face Slater.
I have always been on Kelly’s side of his rivalry with Andy. But, it was so fun to watch! That year when they had the heat for the world title in Pipe was just incredible.
My wife called me at work to tell me the news. Keep in mind she doesn’t care about surfing and I only surf like 20 times a year nowadays. But Andy was really incredible. His picture riding the barrel at Chopes is still to me the best picture in surfing. Love to all the Irons’ family!
