I honestly thought it was Kelly Slater surfing. When I saw Andy Irons written on the screen, I thought: “wow, they are catching up to him!”. Later it became clear that only Andy was ready to face Slater.
I have always been on Kelly’s side of his rivalry with Andy. But, it was so fun to watch! That year when they had the heat for the world title in Pipe was just incredible.
My wife called me at work to tell me the news. Keep in mind she doesn’t care about surfing and I only surf like 20 times a year nowadays. But Andy was really incredible. His picture riding the barrel at Chopes is still to me the best picture in surfing. Love to all the Irons’ family!
