The Billabong Pipe Masters will decide the 2012 ASP World Champion!

COOLANGATTA, Queensland/Australia (Wednesday, November 7, 2012) – Event No. 9 of 10 on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour (WCT), the O’Neill Coldwater Classic at Santa Cruz’s Steamer Lane, has been completed and won by Taj Burrow (AUS), 34.

Heading into the final event of the season, the Billabong Pipe Masters, three surfers remain mathematically in contention for the 2012 ASP World Title: Joel Parkinson (AUS), 31, Kelly Slater (USA), 40, and Mick Fanning (AUS), 31.

Due to the altered format for the Billabong Pipe Masters, all three surfers will automatically be seeded into Round 3 of competition and finish no worse than Equal 13th (1750 points).

ASP WCT surfers’ year-end rankings are based off their top eight finishes from the 10 ASP WCT events in 2012.

As Parkinson is the current rankings leader on the ASP WCT, the following ASP World Title scenarios will be based on his potential finishes at Pipeline.

If Parkinson finishes 13th, 9th or 5th at the Billabong Pipe Masters:
- Slater needs a 5th or higher to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
- Fanning needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title.*
*Contingent upon Slater finishing 5th or Lower at Pipeline.

If Parkinson finishes Equal 3rd at the Billabong Pipe Masters:
- Slater needs a 3rd or higher to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
- Fanning needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title.*
*Contingent upon Slater finishing 5th or Lower at Pipeline.

If Parkinson finishes 2nd at the Billabong Pipe Masters:
- Slater needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
- Fanning cannot win the 2012 ASP World Title.

If Parkinson wins the Billabong Pipe Masters, he will take the 2012 ASP World Title.

The points system is a little tricky to decipher? I mean we have a few different opinions posted above? Can somebody from the asp please let us know what placings parko and slater need to win the world title?
As for who surfs better , well as surfing is an art form, and not in the same category of football or tennis, its not so easy to score. I prefer to see carving and flowing linking maneuvers. old style surfing. to the new hack and air attack. The new generation like the aerial and hacks.Airs are fantastic when they are pulled off perfectly and then flow into another driving bottom turn or such, but to do it at the end of the wave in the close out and get the higher score. No way. I think kelly and john john have the natural ability of flow , carving lines and airs , thats why they are the best surfers at the moment. I really doubt if anyone will match kelly in my life time.
ALSO ON AN EVEN playing field. I mean on a mechanical type reef or sand bar,(pipe , cloud break, snapper etc) Kelly would have the advantage. Some of the events were held in junky shifting conditions. and it was the luck of the surfer who was in the right place at the right time. The vans sunset was like that. Perhaps the mechanical type breaks should have a different points system to the non mechanical breaks?, that would make it easier to really know who is the best surfer on the asp tour. Seems something must be changed to make it fair.

  2. Phil Herrup says:

prediction: parko vs slates in the final and slates backdoors an impossibly deep barrel in the closing seconds to take the win. believe it or not…………

  3. gallb says:

Who knows if Slater’s gonna ride for QUIKSILVE12 for more years?!! let’s go!

  4. ChrisWestOz says:

Talk about trying to over complicate the possible outcomes. It is actually pretty simple. Kelly cannot win the World Title (WT) unless he makes the Quarters or better at Pipe. If Kelly does make the Quarters or better then Parko MUST finish at least one place/round or more higher than Kelly to win the WT otherwise Kelly wins the WT. Mick can only win the WT if he wins Pipe AND Kelly comes 5th or worse at Pipe AND Parko comes 3rd or worse.

  5. dennis m says:

It sucks when someone rips apart a wave with multiple turns and have someone get 9 + points for an aerial..time to make changes ..no more than 4 points per maneuver except tubes which gets 7 points no mas..ins fact surfing is riding waves not air

  6. Orangeshark says:

    Go for it Mick!!

  7. Snapper says:

How did Kelly Slater get scored better than Dusty Payne?? Judges once again bowing to Slater, fearful that he might leave the tour. It’s a plain set up & Parko should already be the 2012 World Champ. Hopefully justice prevails!

    • Joel Parkinsonsdisease says:

      You’re kidding.
Parko’s 8.33 against Travis Logie was a joke. Judges have favoured Parko all year!
what about his 9point plus ride on his first wave against JJF in their match up at Chopes!
JJF is a way better surfer out there and they were left with a one point margin for the rest of the heat. Slater surfs better than Parko all day everyday. Slaters air game is as good as the kids. Parko looks like he’s forcing every air attempt.
As for Parko world champ? he can’t even get over the line ! no wins = NO WIN.
if he was world champ surely thats just encouraging Tom Curren to come back. Style Flow and Turns wont win in this era. There needs to be innovation. Hence your Dusty call. Sure, that was worthy of beating Kelly.
As for the World Title, GO MICK!

  8. sureform says:

Nobody should get a world title when they came in second and thrid all year, It should be mandatory that you win at least win once. Isn’t it a sham to claim your’e number one in the world when you were never only good enough to be number two or three, ten times in a row, you couldn’t win one?. Wow. That being said Parko rips.

  9. Bootyman says:

Dont forget, Slater was injured for one contest and only got 500 points.
    And still remains….amazing.

  10. erno says:

OK, wasn’t aware the rankings published include lowest throw-away adjusted, apologies! No need to post these comments if you think they’ll cause confusion. Maybe include a caption to let us know it’s already adjusted, seems to be some confusion out here.

  11. Rem says:

Is that the photo above Pipeline. Looks more like Teahupoo.

  12. erno says:

In fact, by those calculations, even if SLATE12 takes =3rd, he wins regardless of whether Parko wins Pipe. So if SLATE12 makes it into the quarters he’s won.

  13. erno says:

There’s something wrong with the figures there by my reckoning. If you remove the worst two results of the season, even if Parko wins, giving him 54700 pts, and SLATE12 takes 2nd, giving him 56450 pts, SLATE12 wins, or am I being a total goof?

  14. bill a bung says:

Parko is consistent, true that. But he’s also consistently overscored by his aussie judge bumchumz. And he’s not what you’d call a surfer with repertoire. More a one trick pony. Fantastic power surfer yes, but can’t stick airs for toffee
