ASP Top 34 Confirmed for 2013 ASP World Championship Tour

Sebastien Zietz (HAW), 24, leads the new crop of surfers joining the world’s elite in 2013.

BANZAI PIPELINE, Oahu/Hawaii (Saturday, December 15, 2012) – The 2012 ASP World Championship Tour (WCT) season has come to a close following yesterday’s culmination of the Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons and the clinching of the 2012 ASP World Title by Joel Parkinson (AUS), 31.

While the world’s best surfers prepare for a well-deserved break before the start of the next season, the ASP has determined which surfers will contest for the 2013 ASP World Title:

Seems a bit odd that the next world ranked surfer gets the injuey replacement ahead of the next WCT ranked surfer dont you think?

@Charles L.M. Dunlop @Tefo Haeussler - Yadin's injury was in September 2011. He surfed every WT event in 2012 and received a 13th or 25th place at all of them, until a 5th at Pipe. If he would have got a 3rd at Pipe he would have qualified for 2013. He should have surfed more PRIME and STAR events to keep his 1 world ranking up!

indeed you're right, but he wasn't surfing at 100% this season due to injury. I'd rather have guys try with an injury than miss the tour looking for the injury wildcard. He deserved the wildcard in my opinion.

look at it this way. Yadin had every chance to do as many PRIME events to keep himself on tour. He didn't. Besides, every season someone is out due to injury and if he WANTS to be on tour, he'll be back.

Taylor will be in both Rip Curl Pro WT events as a wildcard in 2013 for certain. He will also compete in select events like the California Prime events and Hurley Pro, and the 2013 Triple Crown in Hawaii. With movie projects for Rip Curl in 2013 we will see more of Taylor Knox now that he is off tour!

Aaron, looks like you have a mental problem with Europeans... Dang will have to prove he is worth being in the CT. Tiago needed almost 8 years sometimes falling for just one spot.He will have time and the system is fair to all athletes.

For me the only reason I still watch the world tour is to see how Slater goes against these kids, so many say this and that about these new guys but for me Slater is the ultimate competitor, there is no-one in the history of pro-surfing that will ever match him maybe in 50yrs there will be a kid who will come along and dominate liike he has but watching him surf like he does at 40 is insane, incredible - I think head've he won this title he would retired but I think he has 1 more in him, Hopefully he will be so amped next year after coming so close not surfing Brazil and probably loosing the title on a couple of bad results. Last word for Taylor Knox a true legend although the last 2/3 years he's not been at his best, enjoy those endless soul surfing sessions.......

I think people here aren't being fair and not taking into account Raoni's guts in Fiji, where he ended up getting hurt and had to stay out of 3 events. His wildcard was well-deserved and he will keep bothering all the athletes who think they're better than any other surfer, just because we have stupid judges that are all the time overscoring waves from any aussie, american or hawaian surfer and underscoring waves from any brazilian surfer! So, they have to surf against the adversaries and the judges! Let's go brazucas, finish up with all of them! This is our year!

Yadin definately should have gotten the wildcard... he surfed much better than his results indicated, especially in the last half of the season. I'm sure Brazilian Bruno below "rips". Does he know what style is? Proper carve, please...

Even getting short from 44 to 34 we still have a bunch of guys that don't belong there. Travis Logie is the worst. But KP is so boring and Glen Hall is an old joke. Please don't cry for Yadin. He's good at barrels and airs, but can't do a carve properly. Congrats to Parko and Slater. What at race... and get ready for Medina strike at 2013.

Hey Bruno, show some respect buddy. The only thing I know is every guy who qualifies for the tour is a better surfer than you. Glenn Hall rips and well and truly earn't his spot. He qualified before even going to Hawaii which indicates a great year on the WQS and therefore has been rewarded with a spot on the dream tour.

What a stupid comment you imbecile. There is a system for qualification and everybody who qualified (other than the wild cards) deserves their spot. If you don't like a surfer in the top 34 question the system, don't make a chump of yourself by giving your unprofessional opinion on the quality of the surfers who did what they had to do to stay on tour.

Sorry Bruno, but you are wrong. I'm Brazilian too, soo, let's talk about brazilians first...Heitor Alves is a great surfer, but in 2012, he was terrible! I live in Oz, in the same place as KP. When it gets big, even Medina would learn something about getting barreled just watching KP....no one who dominates Pipe can be said as he doesn't belong to the select group of best surfers. I respect your point of view, and I fully respect you as a surfer's journalist. But I've seen you surfing, and c'mon, you just can't say that about any of those top surfers. But I'm with you, can't wait to see Medina's strike!

i agree to a certain extent with your comment Bruno but we still want all types of surfers on tour...Kp is amazing in big waves and yadin nicol rips...he grew up with amazing waves in West Australia...he just needs to learn how to surf in competions. We dont want the top 34 to be beachbreak, air surfers. Medina rips but cant ride a backhand tube like KP. The problem is that too many events on the wqs and wct are held in crap waves just to get the crowds(money). There should be more events in places like indo to truly show the talent of the surfers on tour...its pretty much becoming who can do the best air will win. I think medina will win a world title in the next few years not because of his talent(alot of talent) but because he is the best competition surfer i have seen since slater. He hassles more then anyone and claims harder also plus he knows how to get the score to win heats. I think he is an amazing surfer...if he can get better at backhand tube riding and surfing right hand point breaks then he will be hard to beat...he is super competitive, sometimes too much. Guys like john john and jullian will go close also as well. Good to see parko win a world title as well...imagine how many world titles parko, fanning and taj would have won over the years if slater wasnt around...slater is and will always be the greatest surfer ever.

I was hoping Yadin would push Tiago out. I think he's the last boring surfer to watch on tour. Travis Logie's got a killer backhand and charges in heavy lefts. KP needs heavy conditions to show his talent.

Os artistas estão escalados, o elenco é com sempre bom de mais, afinal são a elite do surf mundial. A Tembwa Surfaxé e acredito que todos os verdadeiros amantes e praticantes do nosso nobre esporte, deseja que quebrem altas ondas em todos os campeonatos, que os surfistas saiam ilesos do seus desafios e principalmente e acima de tudo que os juízes the A.S, P., não cometam os erros grosseiros deste ano comprometendo a verdade esportiva. Parko mereceu muito este título parabéns, surf magnífico, aqui tudo bem foi bem entregue. Mas ocorreram erros inaceitáveis, os vencedores das provas de Sunset e Supertubos devem estar envergonhados com os troféus que tem em casa, pudera não lhes pertencem foram conquistados com muito surf pelo Gabriel Medina, mas o mais bacana, é que ele parece nem se afetar com isso, todos virão e principalmente ele sabe, ganhou. Alohaxé é que os ventos mudem trazendo uma brisa de verdade para moralizar o circuito, surfabraços!
