The selections of the trialists for this event is disappointing. The Qld Govt and Quiksilver hold this event on the Gold Coast, yet only 3 or 4 of the 18 trialists live on the Gold Coast and no more than 5 reside in Qld. The 2010 and 2012 ASP World Junior Champion (Jack Freestone) was born, bred, and lives on the Gold Coast and for some reason he can’t get a start! Almost 40% of the trialists are internationals and I understand the Gold Coast is reknowned for tourism but, with all due respect to the international guys, they won’t draw as big of a crowd to watch the trials that the local guys would. I appreciate Quiksilver are compelled to enter some of their own surfers, but they are robbing locals of an opportunity to mix it with the top 32. As I understand it, there is only 1 genuine spot reserved for someone from the local area (Snapper Rocks Club Champion) and potentially a further 4 spots (from placing 1st or 2nd on the QCC or the Trials for the Trials, which is open to Qld residents or members of Qld boardriders clubs). The locals are arguably the best out there because they are the most experienced surfing there – let’s see how many non-locals compete in the trials for other WT events. Go Brenno and Samba and let’s hope next year we get to see you battle it out with more local guys!

would have been nice to see a local surfer given a chance, as is tradition. that is the idea of a wildcard. Dane isnt a wildcard, he is a competing machine, he is a threat. Popular demand wins.

I think in the future kids looking to become a pro will need to take gymnastics classes
to get the flips and rotators down.

Joints are gonna take a pounding and the only way to get longevity like king Slater(41) is by continuosly doing power stretches aka “pilates”.
