World No. 3 Sally Fitzgibbons opened the heat with a warm-up wave and scored a 1.83 before the ocean went flat. In an unusually long lull, she and Johanne Defay, World No. 13, waited for some energy in the water for more than 15 minutes.

When a small wave finally came through Defay paddled, but it didn't form and she lost priority. Fitzgibbons took the opportunity and took off on another, scoring a 2.33 for a two-wave total of 4.16 with fewer than 10 minutes left. Once the Aussie had shifted position to the inside, she rode a succession of short, small waves, using leg strength to pull frontside hacks until momentum petered out.

Defay followed suit and pulled in a few similarly small scores. At the five-minute mark, Fitzgibbons led with 7.10 and Defay had a two-wave total of 4.66. In the final moments, Fitzgibbons solidified a win with a 5.50, the highest score of the 30-minute heat.

Wright quickly found a backup, connecting the dots on a pierbowl right for a solid 7.50. The effort left Moore in need of an excellent 8.50.

While Moore picked up a 4.00, Wright's rhythm continued, adding an 8.33 and 7.60, leaving Moore in need of a combination of scores to advance.

Results: Tyler Wright (AUS) 15.93 def. Carissa Moore (HAW) 11.93

With two days since her last heat, Malia Manuel got back into action right away. After a quick bail out from Nikki Van Dijk, the Hawaiian took off on a soft wave at the horn that gave her an early lead. A follow-up at the 20-minute mark with s-carves and cutbacks toward the pier for a midrange five-pointer gave her a decent lead going into the second half of the heat.

The second half of the heat was spent mostly paddling up and down the lineup looking for decent positioning. With six minutes on the clock, a quick exchange unfolded with both surfers struggling to make the most of the small breakers coming though. Manuel's power even in poor conditions gave her the points edge again. Van Dijk only needed a midrange six to overtake the heat but none were on offer.

Results: Malia Manuel 10.00 def. Nikki Van Dijk 5.43
